The Perfectural Administration of Chania is responsable for the implementetion of this project, which is part of the framework of the Invitation 142 (Operational Program: Information Society 2000-2006) The title of the project is:

«GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM of CHANIA»

Contractor of the Project is the consortium of enterprises «P. Karamoshos – Κ.Liodaki Ο.Ε.», «S. Andreadakis – P.Tsirbas EPE» (TELENET ΕΠΕ) and «Κ. Kotsyfakis» (MINOS ENTERPRISES’S COMPUTERISATION).

Project’s objective is the developpemet of a Fire Crisis Management System for the forests of Chania (area of 4.850 hectares), and particullarly of the protected zones of White Mountain and Samaria’s Gorge.  This area was awarded by tha ||European Council at 1980 as one of the most beautiful regions of Europe.

The System includes a wireless network for high speed data tranfer between the Control Center of the Prefectural Adminitration of Chania and the autonomous telematic network of cameras, which allows the supervisoin of all the region. This system is based to a Geographical Information System (GIS) and other applications, which allow the prevention, the control and the suppression of forest fires. The system is supported by a network of meteorological stations.

The project includes the sale, the installation and the test run of :

• Equipment of Geocraphical Information System

• Cameras with wireless connection for positioning of fires

• Automatic Meteorological stations

• GIS Software for information management and web support

• Digital Satelite Images of the Region of Chania

• System of Database Management

• Services fot the developpement of GIS Applications,education of the Prefecture’s staff and support during the test run period.

The goal of this project  is the development of Prefectural Administration’s Database with envirnmental and historical elements. This information will be avalable for public services and for every citizen.Principal goal is the effective protection of natural disasters (fires) of the forest and the natural environment of Samaria’s gorge, the support to the regional sustainable management and also the upgrade of the life’s quality by tha nature’s protection and the sustainable development of the mountain area.

This project can achieve the regional nature conservation with the rare natural beauties by the prevention and the management of forest fires.

The funcionality of the whole system, which is based to a digital topographic base (scale 1:5000), will allow the:

• Monitoring of Natural Environment

• Digitisation of the whole road network (principal and municipal axes etc.) and the forest road network, which are used by Fire Service and  Police for the effective management of natural diasters.

• Display of Archeological Sites, protected zones and zones Natura 2000

• Display of land use.

• Monitoring of respect of environmental terms.

• Estimation of environmental effects

• Spatial definition of protected zones

• Management and organisation of  the Crisis Center

• Avaibality of mateorological station’s updated data

• Early warning for fire’s start

• Avaibility of meteorological data for everyone.
